[birdky] RPT: Scott's Oriole update
- From: "Palmer-Ball, Brainard \(EPPC OOS KNPC\)" <Brainard.Palmer-Ball@xxxxxx>
- To: "BIRDKY" <birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2007 09:31:37 -0500
Here is what I now know about the Scott's Oriole. I sent the photo to
Paul Lehman who immediately came back with an ID of Scott's Oriole.
David Roemer also thought it was a Scott's when he saw the photo. I
guess I should caution that this ID has not yet been absolutely
confirmed, but if both David and Paul think it's a Scott's, then I'm
personally going to go, if you know what I mean :o)
The bird is all yellow underneath with a gray back with dusky streaks;
it appears to have no dark color in the throat/upper breast (I don't
know why???) as Sibley would suggest it should or might. So this must
make it an imm. male or female???
I just talked to the hosts, Fran and David Slezak, who live just north
of Frankfort off US 127. Take US 127 north to the second or northern
junction of the KY 898 loop; go left on KY 898 and go a mile to Miller
Lane; the Slezak's live at the end of the dead end and Fran drives a
school bus, which should be parked in the drive. Fran said she does not
normally see the bird in the early morning, but that's about all I've
heard so far on the pattern of it's behavior. I noticed that Miller is
not on the Gazetteer, but the general location is on page 37, block B-6.
I told them there would likely be visitors today and mid-morning to
mid-afternoon Saturday ... if you plan to come at another time than
that, you should call them at 502/226-3339.
I'm headed out there now and I think David is on his way to try to take
some photos. Someone will post an update later today if you want to see
what becomes of the ID and visitation pattern.
