A trip to Barkley/Kentucky dams yesterday, February
21, was intended primarily to enjoy the day
photographing gulls. Not many gulls were present
below the dams and only Ring-billed, Herring, and
Bonaparte's were observed. Most of the gulls in the
area are spending the day on the mid-lake bars on
Barkley or up the lake on Kentucky. Waterbird
migration is well underway with thousands of birds
resting on both lakes. With much of the day spent
shooting gulls, little time was devoted to
scrutinizing the flocks of waterbirds on the lakes. A
few birds of note were recorded and are listed below.

Wood Duck (2) Tree Nursery below Ky Dam
Pintail (20+) on each lake
N Shoveler scattered
Canvasback (110+) Barkley

Gr Scaup (15-20) Barkley
Ruddy (120) Barkley
C Loon (1) Barkley

I returned to the dams today to look through the birds
more thoroughly and was joined by Hap Chambers. Areas
covered were Barkley from Kuttawa to the dam and
Kentucky from the dam to the terminus of hwy 962
(Birmingham Point) on the western side. Most of the
birds on Kentucky were observed from the Little Bear
Creek boat ramp and Birmingham Point. Highlights are
as follows:
