Nine BBC/KOS members participated in yesterday's postponed trip to Peabody
WMA. What a day of changing complexions with round after round of moderate
to heavy snow showers passing by. I subjected the hapless participants to
some exploratory walking in the western portion of the Ken Unit in search of
Long-eared Owls. Unfortunately, no Long-eareds or sign of same were located.
We did kick up a couple of Short-eared Owls, several Northern Harriers, at
least 4 Northern Bobwhite, a flock of 15-20 Savannah Sparrows, a few
American Tree Sparrows, and a couple of Brown Thrashers. A side trip to
Union Hill Road netted us 15-20 Purple Finches at feeders and another to
Schultztown Road east of the WMA yielded a light morph Rough-legged Hawk.
Mid-afternoon, we drove up to the Lloyd's in southern Daviess County hoping
to get a look at their adult Harris's Sparrow. The heaviest snow showers of
the day and brisk winds chilled us to the bone, and only the last three plus
Steve Anderson were fortunate enough to wait it out long enough to get some
wonderful looks at this beautiful bird. The Harris's is NOT a regular in the
yard, and according to Bobby is most reliable early in the morning and after
4:00 p.m. CST (we did not see it until about 4:40).
Thanks to the group, who were real troopers, getting wet feet, frozen toes,
and some sore muscles for the morning tromping. At least we can all say we
got some good exercise :o)
