[birdky] SANDHILL CRANES (feb 13)

Saw my first Sandhill cranes Sunday afternoon on my way to Clarksville TN for
work required training. As I understand, very few cranes come through extreme
western KY where I live and bird and those that do always seem to elude me.
While traveling I-24 at mile marker 74 in Christian county, I noticed a small
group of birds on the horizon to my west. I jokingly said to my wife that it
sure would be funny if those were sandhill cranes since I had left my
binoculars at home. As it happened I didn't need the binoculars. No less than
3/4 mile later the interstate turned slightly westward and intersected the
flight path of the yet unidentified flock. I'm not sure if the rainy weather
had them hugging the ground or if they had recently become airborne but they
crossed at about 60 yards out and 40 yards high. Although not the best or
longest look in world; I'll take it. Birders can't be choosers.
