The adult female Rufous Hummingbird that originally appeared in our yard
October 12, 2003, is still making daily visits at our feeders. Since the
beginning of her visits, I have watched her molt and replace all of her
rectrices, her secondaries, and all of her primaries except P9 and P10 on
each wing.
I find it interesting that the outer most primaries have not been molted.
Hummingbird experts: Is this typical of wintering hummers?
The warm days has certainly been a blessing. She has been observed daily
hawking small flying insects. I suppose when the time is right she will be
ready to migrate.
