I have many photos of the gull in question, and it is
indeed the same one Brainard photographed in January
judging from the markings. The photos published were
taken during very light overcast which lightened the
bird. I also have photos of the bird taken the same
day during heavy overcast with no brightening or
shadows. I chose the two published due to one being a
good side shot, and the other showing how concolored
the bird looked from the rear. I also have a number
of decent video stills lifted from the 17th which show
the bird in flight. I haven't had time to go through
all the images and pick the best ones, crop etc. and
send them to Gary for publishing yet.

I intend to ask Gary to devote a page to this bird on
the KOS website, but I won't have time prepare them
until next week. In the meantime, everyone who is
interested can be researching thayeri/kumlieni.

I stepped back from the kumlieni decision primarily
due to the bird having a relatively solid tailband,
and some solid areas in the center of the tertials. I
don't know the range of variability of these features
in kumlieni, but feel they are better for thayeri.
Many kumlieni have some form of tailband, but
generally not as solid. I feel that some features are
very good for kumlieni, which I'll get into later, but
think the bird is probably an intergrade. Once we get
all the images published, we can solicit more opinions
from authories.
