Ohio County Strip Mines - February 7, 2004
On this cold snowy day ten observers located 53 species. Ducks and geese were
not numerous on the lakes and ponds, but we did find 3 Common Goldeneye,
Mallards, Ring-necked Ducks, Wigeons, a Black Duck and Canada Geese. Raptor
sightings included a Bald Eagle, Northern Harriers, Red-tailed Hawks and 1
Rough-legged Hawk. Only 3 Short-eared Owls were sighted. Other highlights
include
Northern Bobwhites, Savannah Sparrows, Tree Sparrows and Purple Finches. Rossy,
the
Ross's Goose, was again found with the other domesticated geese walking
around the farm yard. It probably thinks it's a domesticated goose now as the
farmer says it never leaves.
We tried to locate the Spotted Towhee in Muhlenberg County but were not
successful. It could still be there among the many towhees that were flying
around.
