[birdky] RPT: Late night Sandhill Cranes

Last night, a noise tickled the back of my brain around 12:30 AM as I was
sound asleep. At first, I thought it was the pack of coyotes that runs in
the area. It's a large pack, some say around 25, and they sure sing pretty.
But last night they really sounded off-key so my tired brain started
attempting to ascribe a source to he "noise". Was it a bearing going out on
the heat pump? Was the dryer running in the basement? Well, by now my
brain was waking up and it said the noise was Sand Hill Cranes. I said to
my brain "Yeah, right!!!" It's the middle of the night! In fact, I woke up
enough to look at the clock. 12:38 AM.
The sound continued and after considerable searching through all sound files
stored in this tired brain, it kept coming up with the same conclusion. SHC.
SO I got out of bed, went to the front door and walked out onto the porch.
Wave after wave of Sand Hill Cranes were passing over head. I came back in
for binoculars to be able to see them better and went back outside. I
watched and listened in amazement until my feet were so cold that I had to
come back inside. As I returned to bed, I looked at the clock. 12:53 AM
and I could still hear them passing overhead! Their complaints that they
were headed the wrong direction (North) finally faded out at 12:58 and I
laid there in wonderment. In all the years I've heard and seen them fly
over this farm, I've never witness anything like that.
Our farm is located in Edmonson County, KY not too far from MCNP and about
half way between Barren River Reservoir and Nolin.
