I had a chance to run by Sauerheber yesterday, January 11th. Geese are
relatively diverse and easy to see along KY 268; there are not HUGE
numbers, but easily found were 1500+ Greater White-fronted Geese and
750+ Snow Geese along with some hundreds of Canadas. I did not see the
Tundra Swans during my brief run by (mid-morning) nor Cackling Geese,
but I did find at least a dozen Ross's Geese by scanning the Snows. Good
numbers (dozens) of Gadwall, American Wigeon, and Northern Shovelers are
present, along with smaller numbers of Northern Pintail, Green-winged
Teal, American Black Duck, lot of Mallards, and common divers
(Ring-necked, Les. Scaup, Hooded Mergs).
 
Down at Lake Peewee there was not too much to report other than that the
female Common Merganser continues and a pair of adult Mute Swans was
present. Elsewhere in western Hopkins County I saw one of two dark morph
Harlan's Red-tailed Hawks that were present last winter along Clear
Creek. The reclaimed mine area along KY 70 east of Madisonville had a
dark morph Rough-legged Hawk, 6 Red-tails; 8 harriers, 3 kestrels, and a
Short-eared Owl.
