78 species were recorded on the Somerset CBC held on December 30, which is a 
little below average. Firsts for the count were Merlin and American 
Woodcock. The lucky team that reported the Merlin said it was a blue backed 
male and they watched it catch and eat a bird. They also saw a Sharp-shinned 
Hawk catch a grackle. Other highlights included a Loggerhead Shrike, 12 
Sandhill Cranes and a good count of Fox Sparrows.
Misses included Black Vulture and Northern Bobwhite.
