This is the Kentucky Bird Line, sponsored by the Kentucky Ornithological
Society. This update is current as of January 23, 2006 at 11:00 AM EDT.
The highlights of this update are:
Postings slow down during the time between the winter bird counts and
spring activity, and this year is no different. But still a few things
of interest have been mentioned. A vulture roost in the Frankfort area
had a counted 653 birds on the 20th, with over 400 of them being BLACK
VULTURE.
LEAST SANDPIPERS were observed on Wildcat creek of Kentucky Lake and in
Fulton County, along the road to the ferry, with counts of 9 and 16
respectively. 300 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen at Wildcat creek on the
21st with the sandpipers. And a single AMERICAN PIPIT was seen in the
same area as the Fulton County sandpipers.
5 ROSS'S GEESE were noted among the Snow Geese at Reel Foot, and a
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen on the southwest portion of the 425 bypass
around Henderson on the 19th. This bird has been seen there before.
Following a single INDIGO BUNTING counted on the Somerset Bird count, a
second individual INDIGO BUNTING was seen in Pulaski County; the amount
of blue in the plumage identified it as a different bird.
Thanks for calling the Kentucky Bird Line. You may leave a report after
the tone. Please include your name, the date, the location, and the
time of your observation when filing a report. If your report contains
rare or out of season species, please send appropriate documentation to
