It appeared to me that the birds woke up this morning and had forgotten what
snow was! They weren't trying to peck or scratch through it, they just were
sitting there looking as if they were trying to figure out what to do or
chatting among themselves about how long it was going to be before this
white stuff -- its first substantial appearance in Louisville all winter --
to disappear.  The robins, so common this winter, still traded back and
forth to the now nearly stripped holly tree, but the only thing that made
the seed eaters move was the appearance of a gorgeous adult Cooper's Hawk
who would NOT leave the yard. It just sat there 20 feet over my head as I
waved my arms, yelled and clapped my hands. I think it looked my way once or
twice, but movement in my aunt's yard next door was the only thing that
eventually caused it to move along.

On another note, there is an impressive mixed-species roost of vultures in
Frankfort along what is called "The Connector" which sort of parallels I-64.
A couple of evenings ago I counted no less than 550 birds in about 10 trees
down along the Kentucky River ... more than 1/2 are Blacks.
