[birdky] RFI: Bird Ticks
- From: RESEARCH Hilton Pond <research@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Birders on various listservs recently have posted comments and/or
photos of birds infested with ticks. In the past few days here at
Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History I personally have
encountered two Common Grackles and a Cedar Waxwing with one tick
each.
I would appreciate your responding to me off-list if you have
encountered any birds this winter with ticks, either through
sightings or by finding dead birds. Please indicate date and location
of encounter, bird species, number of ticks on the bird, and
location(s) of the tick or ticks (crown, nape, eyelid, neck, etc.).
I'll post the results of the survey in an upcoming edition of "This
Week at Hilton Pond."
Based on my own encounters and other reports, it does indeed appear
there is a significant increase in tick infestations this winter, at
least in the Carolina Piedmont.
Thanks in advance,
BILL
