I checked the Purple Martin Conservation Association's (PMCA) website
this evening and discovered a new citizen-based project titled Project
MartinRoost. NEXRAD radar was used in 2004 to locate potential martin
roosts in North and South America. A number of possible roosts have
been identified in Kentucky, but all are currently unconfirmed. PMCA is
asking birders to try and locate these roosts and determine if martins
are responsible for the radar signatures. One potential roost here in
eastern Ky is located in or around Maysville in Mason County. Members
of EKBC may want to band together this July or August to search for the
actual location of this roost.
