[birdky] RPT: Paradise CBC results

Nine observers participated in the Paradise CBC on New Year's Day. I think
the species total will settle at 94, which misses the count record by 1. Had
we retained any semblance of real winter weather, I'm sure we could have had
at least a few more species of waterfowl.
Highlights include:
Common Loon (1 in each of Ohio and Muhlenberg cos ... a good bird for this
count)
Greater White-fronted Geese (5 at Island Lake, Ohio Co.)
Ross's Goose (probably not our little friend from Union Hill Road, but one
with other geese at Island Lake, Ohio Co.)
American Bittern (perhaps same individual that has been found on Sinclair
Unit two other times in previous winters)
Rough-legged Hawk (thought we might miss it this year, but I think we had 4
widely separated birds; 3 light; 1 dark)
Virginia Rail (at least 3 calling from their traditional marsh in Muhlenberg
County)
Sandhill Crane (two small flocks of 5 and 13 birds overhead)
Short-eared Owl (ONLY ONE!!!! ... flushed during day ... thanks for the hard
work, Major!; hard to believe one has to "hope" for a Shorty on this count
when we have had up to 134 on a single count in the mid-1990s ... is it a
bad year or are they steadily decreasing ? ? ? )
Marsh Wren (two in a stand of Phragmites in Muhlenberg Co.)
Pine Warbler (2 different males in Muhlenberg Co.)
LeConte's Sparrow (at least 2 in different locales in Muhlenberg Co.; low,
damp fields; at least one and maybe 2-3 in past years' area on Sinclair
Unit; the other on Peabody Gibraltar mine)
Grasshopper Sparrow (a first-count bird; came up in the aforementioned
LeConte's field on Gibraltar with a bunch of Savannah Sparrows and perched
for good looks in briars; actually surprised this is the first we've had
with as many as are out there in the summer)
Thanks to all who participated: Mary Bill Bauer, Mark Bennett, Amy Covert,
Roseanna and Steve Denton, Matt Stickel, Major Waltman, Barbara Woerner and
myself.
Look for full results of this and other counts in the February issue of The
Kentucky Warbler.
