One caveat: For the "current birds," I haven't been in touch with a
number of the hosts recently, so it's quite possible that some of those
birds have also departed.

It has been my experience for areas east of Louisiana that many/most adult
Rufous begin departing primary wintering sites during the last half of
December and through all of January. Such departures were once considered
good
evidence that the onset of harsh, below freezing temperatures meant certain
death
of all such poor wayward birds. Now, thanks to year after year recaptures
by area hummingbird banders, these old myths are finally being put to rest.
