[birdky] RPT: 1/30/2004: Snow Buntings and others

I had a chance to get out around Louisville a little today. Snow Buntings
have been just to our north for over a week now; I couldn't find any on the
family farm this morning, and only had 3 Horned Larks and a flyover Lapland
Longspur, so I went down to the Falls of the Ohio late in the afternoon,
where they are sometimes seen. There were a few very unhappy-looking
Killdeer, Horned Larks, and American Pipits trying to make a living on the
barren shorelines of the largely ice and snow-covered fossil beds. I had
just about given up when five Snow Buntings including 3 nice males flew
through my field of view and landed down on the lower beds across from what
we call "Wave Rock." I suspect that a few more will be found over the
weekend at various places.
Other birds at the Falls included 125 or so Canada Geese (earlier in the
week there was an immature swan sp. with the Canadas, but it has apparently
moved on); 6 No. Pintail, 125+ Ring-billed Gulls, at least 10 Herring
Gulls, and 8 very pitiful looking Double-crested Cormorants that had to be
wishing they were in Florida.
Also on the family farm was a crisp looking male Merlin, at least 25-30
Chipping Sparrows, 10-15+ American Tree Sparrows, and a Pine Siskin with
about 100 American Goldfinches (we're perhaps one more cold snap and big
snow to our north away from having a redpoll or two??).
