Highlights from recent near-home birding trips are as
follows:

Homer Murray Rd, Woodburn:

2 White-crowned Sparrows of the gambelii race (adult
and juv)

Jan 4:

Barren Reservoir

Common Loon (2)
N. Shoveler
Dunlin (5) Walnut Creek area
Least Sandpiper (4) Walnut Cr. area
Killdeer  (Approx. 320) Walnut Cr. area
Bonaparte's Gull (900-1000)  Walnut Cr. area
Purple Finch (8+) Bailey's Point

Chipping Sparrows still present in yard daily.

The light-morph Harlan's Red-tail spending its second
winter on the WKU farm is an exceptional bird.  It
exhibits the alternate harlani tail pattern, white
with narrow dark bands including a slightly wider
sub-terminal band.  This is the only Red-tail I've
ever seen with this pattern.  It has ghostly white
underparts with a moderate belly band.  I have tried
numerous times to photograph it, but it is extremely
wary (fortunately for it), and I have been unable to
approach within .5 to .6 mile.  I was able to
videotape the bird through the scope last winter from
about .6 mile.  If anyone is interested in seeing a
video still showing the tail pattern, email me and I
will share one.
