"Our" Rufous Hummingbird is still visiting our feeder. We are getting quite
attached to it and fear we will be subject to depression when it leaves.
Today I took my class to "German's Pond" just off KY 1896 and South Buster Pike
in Boyle County because Bill Kemper reported a Ross's Goose among a large group
of Canada Geese. While we did not get a great view of it, we were able to see
the bill and the black tail feathers. It was lying with its back to us during
the time we were there and I could only say that it was highly likely a Ross's.
I went back about 2 hours later and caught it walking around and feeding. It
was clearly 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the Canada Geese and the marking were
clearly Ross's. The best place to see it is to turn South onto South Buster
Pike from 1896, go over the overpass crossing the railroad tracks, and park in
front of the farm gate. Looking down toward the pond (to the NE), it was on
the hillside on the other side of the pond.
