Complete KY CBC results will appear in the February Ky. Warbler, which
hopefully will be in the hands of KOS members by early to mid-March.
Overall, the numbers of kinglets statewide appeared to be lower on most of
the counts I participated in, but so, too, were numbers of many passerines
in general, especially those relying on "fruits" like cedar berries,
honeysuckle, poison ivy, etc. Waxwings and robins will be missed or below
average on most counts, too. I couldn't figure the kinglets, though, as our
past few winters have been relatively mild and they largely eat insects in
larval or pupal form in the winter.
The overall number of Golden-crowned Kinglets on the Natural Bridge count
may actually have been below average, but because the species is a
characteristic component of forested areas in KY, it was present in numbers
on this count. What the Natural Bridge count lacked in quantity of species,
it gains in quality! The count will likely lead the state in numbers of
species like Winter Wren and Golden-crowned Kinglet. In addition, it may
end up being the ONLY count with Red-breasted Nuthatch (because of resident
nesting population) and Purple Finch (which has been missed on every count I
participated on)!!
