December 31: Amy and I ended the year with nice study of the 23 Tundra Swans
at Sloughs WMA in western Henderson County. The flock is apparently quite
reliable along KY 268 at the Sauerheber Unit, where the most flooded area is
present along the road (the area is called the Woods Tract and lies between
the east and west entrances off 268). Best views on the 31st were obtained
from nearby Tram Road (gravel to north), although I did have to ask some
hunters if they minded us standing there along the road for several minutes
in relatively close proximity to their blinds on adjcacent private land.
According to area manager, Mike Morton, the swans roost back on the WMA, but
they are usually present from mid-morning to around 2:00 p.m. CST, but on
Tuesday they lingered in the area until dark. Also present were most
dabblers including 50+ No Shovelers (one pair of which was diving for food;
the female of the pair did so repeatedly over a 20 minute period, staying
down for 5-6 seconds per dive -- I've seen dabblers do this on occasion, but
I can never remember seeing a shoveler dive, nor see any dabbler dive for
such a persistent period).

January 1: we covered a territory in eastern Henderson Co. and western
Daviess Co. for the Sorgho CBC. Highlights were a flock of Am. Pipits, a
sub-adult Bald Eagle perched on the Green River, a Brown Thrasher, at least
25 Lapland Longspurs with larks in farmland south of Curdsville, Daviess
Co., and LOTS of sparrows and cardinals, including two sizable flocks of
White-crowneds.
