While I agree some of the images on the site are not up to
professional standards, they are nevertheless absolutely amazing
since the have been taken with a web cam. What I was most impressed
with was the sensitivity of the new web cams. These seem to be
several orders of magnitude better than my old QuickCam (with which
M42 was easy). By cooling these web cams (a fairly easy and
inexpensive modification) the specifications are close to those of
the multi-thousand dollar CCD cameras.
My goal at the marathon will be to image B&W pictures, not try to
produce images for S&T. As such they will most likely be far from
perfect. If this turns out as easy as I think (not necessarily the
finding of the objects) I think there may be more who would give this
a try. It just may open a new era for the marathon.
BTW, I really have no misconception about viewing/imaging all 110
objects. If I get 50% I will feel it a success.
