[AZ-Observing] Re: How deep can you see?

I thought the red light issue ws settled definitively a while ago in favor
of red light, all other things being equal. Somebody whipped out the charts
and graphs. Steve's question pits "red light" against "dim green light". A
lot of observers have such bright red light that they are destroying their
night vision whilst thinking they are not. I would use dim any color rather
than these crimson beacons I see out there some times. Destroyed visual
purple takes another 20 minutes or so to replace. Thus why you get mad at
arriving car lights after dark. They have robbed someone who has invested
time in getting to a dark site and adapting to the dark. Night vision
goggles would be cool. You could drive all the way into the site with the
lights off and park.

> The one from your list that is interesting is the one about flashlight
color. Years ago, if you bought from a surplus store one of Uncle Sam's
angle neck milspec green flashlights, it came with a red filter and a white
and a clear diffuser to insert over the lamp. This same light started to
include a blue-green filter about year 1988. Supposedly this color was
better for navigation and reading than the red. I tried it once or twice
and found it just as good as red if I put in the clear diffuser also. Did
not do much beyond that as I drew lots of comments from observers about a
non-standard color light on the site. and most of this came from the astro
photographers.
