[AZ-Observing] Re: Observing this weekend

FYI, a small group from the Coconino Astronomical Society is planning to
observe at the Doney Mountain Picnic area on Friday night, October 8. Camping
isn't allowed in the picnic area. However, there are restroom facilities and
easy access on paved roads. I'm planning to be there with my new 18-inch
Obsession.
To get to the picnic area, drive 26 miles from the Flagstaff Mall north on
Hwy 89A to the north entrance of Wupatki. This entrance is just a couple of
miles north of the small community, Antelope Hills. Turn right into Wupatki
National Monument.
Proceed 9.5 miles (well past the Lomaki ruins turn on the left and the
Citadel pull-off on the right), and turn right onto a very short road heading
into
the Doney Mtn Picnic Area. This road terminates in the parking lot. A small
wooden sign on the left marks the turnoff.
If you find yourself going down a steep curving hill (the Doney fault) and
your odometer shows you've driven 10 miles or more since entering, you have
gone too far and need to go back.
GPS coordinates of the parking lot are N35d31'55.0" W111d24'16.0".
This site is that an elevation of 5589' and will likely be warmer than most
locations in the immediate vicinity of Flagstaff. It's also in the Coconino
National Forest, so we don't need special permission to be there at night.
This is about an hour's drive from Flagstaff.
Regards,
Bill in Flagstaff
