That's the result of "wavelet" processing in Registax software, which attempts
to sharpen the image. It does so, but invariably introduces artifacts. In
coaxing out detail on the disc, you're left with the artificial bright rim in
my image. I'm sure if I had stuck around to shoot Venus this morning, my image
would have a lot of noise surrounding the crescent as a result of the using
software to sharpen it.
The answer, of course, lies in shooting through filters with a monochrome video
camera at a larger image scale, as the pros like Chris Go, Sean Walker, and
Paul Maxson do.
