Nasa is claiming they want at least two suppliers for these programs since
Boeing in the last ten years had bought up the major players in the last really
big program. Also NASA said they wanted to spread the wealth as if there is
any wealth to spread. Its going to be interesting to see how far this new
effort lasts before it is outright killed by the next Adminsistration. This
country is approaching 10 trillion dollars in Debt and more and more decent
paying jobs are leaving the country I would like to know how they think this
is
going to be payed for. Once I retire from Honeywell Aerospace, sometime in the
next five to ten years my position will not be filled along with a whole lot
of other people's positions. I guess ultimately all the space hardware will
be manufactured in Mexico and in China the software done in India and Wal Mart
will end up as the prime contractor. Last of course space crews will be
filled by indonesians.
I really think we are seeing the last gasps of the manned American Space
effort. This is something that certain elements wanted to do since the
Kennedy day's. Nixon got the Apollo program killed even though the last four
missions were already bought and paid for that was Apollo 18 through 21. What
was supposed to kill off the manned effort was the space shuttle the space
plane without a destination as was billed on NBC in 1972. Well that did not
happen that way it ended up going forward. The military needed something to
put
there payloads into orbit this was the only thing that kept the space shuttle
alive in the 70's Now 25 years later with two destroyed shuttles and two dead
crews I guess the reusable space plane was too advanced a concept. The X33
program was outright cancelled that would have brought new life to the effort.
Now we have this apollo looking thing from the 60's and this is all they can
come up with? In the meantime Astronomy is going to suffer because of all
the funding drying up for this new program that will ultinately go no where.
In about ten years I would expect everything to come crashing down including
the International Space Station. In the next century I would be looking to
China and Russia for the really big efforts like going back to the moon and
Mars
and beyond. Until there is some real interest in doing something by Joe Six
pack in this country I would not be looking for anything meaningful
happening.
As far as special interests are concerned It would not surprise me to find
out that a lot of Bush family and Chenney associates had something to do with
this.

Since Boeing-Northrop had extensive experience in space efforts in the
past, I'm wondering if this is trickle down favoritism to cronies by
bush or cheney, especially since NASA is so tight lipped?
