What a grand night for Mars.
I observed for a few hours tonight using my 6" refractor with 7.5 mm
eyepiece with #23A red filter and moon filter stacked. This provided
an excellent view at around 160 power. The best I've seen of Mars so
far.
There appears to be a dust storm brewing in Hellas. Wednesday night, it
occupied the northwest corner of Hellas
(http://members.aol.com/billferris/mars091103.html ) and last night appeared to
have expanded to cover the western third
of the impact basin.
In my 10-inch, this feature has a yellowish tinge when viewed through the
neutral density filter and appears as a slightly brighter splotch within Hellas
when viewed through the 23A light red.
Regards,
Bill
