[AZ-Observing] Observing Mars Sunday nite

Does any one know the history of the search and discovery of Phobos and Deimos?
It occurred to me while observing Mars last nite that Phobos ,at least, is not
a difficult object to observe. I could hold Phobos steady in a 16" Newtonian at
260x in 5-6/10 seeing conditions. At this time Phobos was only one Mars
diameter away from the planet. Why were these moons overlooked for so long
especially in the age of observational astronomy? Maybe the the large known
moons in the solar system biased thinking against searching for smaller moons.
Any thoughts on this? Lynn
