Stan,
I used a neutral density filter at Cherry Rd last Saturday night and it
helped "boost" the contrast of surface markings nicely and reduce the =
glare.
As far as the edge-of-field performance of your EP, it could be that the
geometry of the light path (through the edge of the lens grouping inside =
the
EP) as it enters your eye causes you to experience a "different" view. =
If
the intensity of Mars is reduced a bit in this way, you *might* get =
improved
contrast, but it certainly is not a traditional way to view planets.
As far as the halo effect goes, I see it a lot (but not all the time), =
so
for me I think it is in my eye. Mars unfiltered is painfully bright and =
I
wouldn't be surprised if I am experiencing "scatter" through my cornea.
The halo *could* be a baffling issue, but it is not very often you will =
be
viewing a -3 mag planet, so I wouldn't necessarily sweat too much about =
it.
Is your scope a Tak? If so, baffling is most likely not an issue.
This is all speculation on my part, so this message is discounted 50% =
from
$0.02 to $0.01 . . .
Matt
