Hello all;

I am including the flyer for the Novice Group Meeting at the bottom of this
message. If you are interested, or know someone who is an astronomical
beginner, please pass the flyer on to them. Generally what we do at these
meetings is have a variety of knowledgeable amateur observers set up their
telescopes and they are prepared for lots of questions. So, if you are the
owner of a new scope, then please bring it. If you are not a telescope owner,
but considering the purchase of one, just bring your questions, some water and
a jacket. If the weather is bad, the meeting will be postponed to November 23.

Hope to see you there;
Steve Coe
SAC Novice Group chairman

Astronomy Novice Group Meeting
Sat., Oct. 26, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Did the guy at the camera store laugh and point at your last astrophotos?

Is "Lost in Space" a re-run of your last observing session?

Then the Novice Group is just for you. All you need is an interest in viewing
Arizona skies. Please be on time, the demonstrations need to start in twilight
for you to see how the telescopes work, dress warm and bring your curiosity.
The Flatiron site is at least a one hour drive from the city lights, so be on
the road by 5:00 PM.

Flatiron Site directions

Travel west on I-10 until you get to the 339th Ave. exit, the Rip Griffin's
Truck Stop is at this exit. Go north (right) on 339th Ave. for 2 miles and
then turn west (left) on Indian School Rd. Go 2 mi. and then turn north
(right) on 355th Ave. This road becomes Wickenberg Road along the way. You
will pass Flatiron Mountain on the left, hence the name of the site. At mile
marker 23.3 you will turn east (right) on a wide dirt road. If you go too far
on Wickenberg Road, there is a cattle guard and a Bureau of Land Management
sign immediately along the road to let you know, you went too far and missed
the turn. So, this is NOT the dirt road that runs along a fence line, the
correct dirt road is to the south of the fence. Note your odometer reading
when you turn onto the dirt road, the site is 0.9 miles off the pavement. The
dirt road goes through a wash and the site is on the left after you have
traveled through the wash. It is a large area of desert pavement on the left
side of the road. Some white rocks mark the entrance to the observing site.
The trip is all on hard surface roads, until you turn onto the dirt road, which
is well maintained.
