[AZ-Observing] Cherry Road

Howdy all;
A nice turnout for the "The Heck with the Monsoons" star party at Cherry Road.
We had 19 vehicles and a fun gang of eager observers. AJ and I had driven up
and arrived about 6:15 to find that eight or nine anxious observers were
already there. It looked like all that we would be able to do was talk about
observing, the clouds were pretty thick at sunset. However, some holes
appeared and Tom Polakis and I enjoyed a some views in my 6 inch f/6
Maksutov-Newtonian. We stuck with bright and famous objects, but the Ring and
M-13 were providing pretty good views for a cloudy night.
The clouds moved in for a while and we gathered in a circle and discussed a
variety of topics from the averted baseball strike to electronic setting
circles. After 30 minutes or so of "exchanging views", the clouds started to
clear and I aligned the scope so that I could find some Stock open clusters in
Cassiopeia. I made some drawings and wrote observations of three of these
rather obscure clusters when the clouds rolled in and we tore down the scopes
and made our way home.
So, at least for the two years that we have had this star party so far, we have
not been completely skunked. We have always had at least an hour or two of
viewing. With that in mind I will look at the calendar and choose a date for
the third annual Monsoons star party. Hope to see ya there.
