It was good to get out again, wasn't it. The field was quite full but sunset
and few latecomers arrived in twilight. We had a few novices, including my
friends Laura & Phil. Steve gave them a talk on the types of scopes and how
they work and the advantages & disadvantages of each. As it got got dark I
helped Laura & Phil set up & align their ETX90. Then got to work on my
observing list which was the call for observations for Sagittarius &
Vulpecula. While working on my list, I'd offer objects for Laura & Phil to
look at.
Sky Commander got a good alignment and I made my way through the list rather
quickly. A few challenge objects AJ included were Palomar 8 & Rosund 4. Both
has to be ID'd by matching the starfield. Glad I had the foresight to print
them out from SkyMap. CG Vulpeculae was another interesting one. I had just
id'd the field and was starting to look for something red. I asked AJ if he
saw anything and he noted the field was moving. Just my luck the platform
hit the stop. After a quick alignment & reset, I located the field again.
Both AJ & I agreed that if CG Vul was showing any color, it wasn't apparent
in the 8". It'll be interesting to see other's observations in the NL. AJ
had suggested T Lyr as another red star to look at and this one did show
some color, seemed a bit orange to me.
You'll have to read about the rest of my observations in the NL.
I was one of the multitudes that left around midnight. I would have loved to
stay longer, but I found out last Wednesday that I was scheduled to lector
at the 1100 Mass. I really thought it best to be somewhat lucid before
proclaiming the Word of the Lord to my parish :).

Cherry Road was excellent last night for the SAC Star Party and Novice Group
meeting, and turned into a long 7-hour observing session, a rarity for me in
the summer months. Seeing wasn't that good and a few occasional banks of
patchy clouds rolled over. The Moon was to come up at 0240, but was not a
factor until after 3 due to the hilly terrain. Those staying the night were
myself, Joan McGue, Peter Argenziano, Lynn Blackburne, and the intrepid
Jimmy Ray. The other 22 vehicles reluctantly departed mostly around the 11
to midnight "decision time". Not being out since June, I kept up a
blistering pace of observed objects for a grand total of 14 new objects, or
an average of 2/hr!
