Orion claims they are using Ohara FPL 53 that is the same glass
Astro-Physics has been using for the last 10 to 12 years. Tak uses the same
glass. The
only people using fluorite is Telescope Engineering Company and the two models
they sell using that stuff is really costly. Actually when you get right down
to it. Using FPL 53 and the correct mating elements such as what AP uses for
its triplets their is really no reason to use fluorite. At least in the form
that Takahashi was using years ago with its limited production FC series
which you can find on Astro-Mart from time to time. Tak claims they were using
Fluorite on their FS series but I think that was an advertising ploy because
of the cost of Fluorite they would never had been selling the FS scopes for
the prices they were.

Yes, just distinguishing using shorthand between Orion's ED glass and the
exotic and expensively crafted fluorite and triplet Tak, Televue,
Astrophysics
and TMB brands, These are totally "APO", and they are better both
mechanically
as well as optically. ("APO" has several definitions.) I'm sure Orion will
back off on the price after introduction, as they did with the 100mm.
Doesn't
matter, I'll be buying on Astromart and not retail anyway, sorry, telescope
industry. You can get these better brands of small refractors on Astromart
for
$2000 and under and with the accessories, I've seen them.
