[AZ-Observing] Re: Lowell Star Party?

In response to requests for a more observer-oriented experience
as part of the Lowell Star Party, organizer Rusty Tweed went to some
effort to scout out a reaosnable place for viewing that would handle
enough people. The site is at the base of A1 Mountain, toward the
western end of Observatory Mesa (the east end is Mars Hill), about
four miles west of the Mars Hill campus. It is due north of the
Naval Observatory (the 61-inch dome is probably visible from the site),
so should have sky of similar darkness, roughly half a magnitude
brighter than natural at the zenith (is that a 6?). I don't know
exactly where the site is, so I can't say anything about seeing,
but it should be better than at the Snowbowl parking lot (the previous
location), which was severely plagued by cold air drainage off
the Peaks (even at ~9500 feet). Whatever nighttime breezes there are
will matter a lot in this regard.
