My short answer as to where to go for tonight is Flat Iron. I'm going
to stay away from Cherry Rd tonight because of the weather. The
satellite images for clouds show the huge buildup in this area. Just go
out in your yard and take a look.
Clear Sky Clocks for Cherry Rd have 30% cloud cover, below average
transparency and good seeing for 8pm MST. Forecasts for the Cherry Rd
area all have references to chance of showers in the Flagstaff,
Prescott, Cottonwood and Camp Verde regions.
For Flat Iron, Clear Sky Clocks it is clear, transparent and good seeing
at same time of 8pm. Forecasts for Phoenix area sez partly cloudy then
clearing - lows mid 70s to 80s. Yes it will be hot, bring lots of water
along.
Based on the above I am not willing to take a chance on the Cherry Rd
weather tonight. If the weather up there changes it probably won't do
so until later, much later and to late to post a decision here.
Having said all that I'm going to head out to Flat Iron. Any and all
that would like to join in please do. It should be lots of fun.
Approximate solar events are sunset 7:22pm twilight 8:50pm. Both times
are MST.
Directions to Flat Iron for those interested are.
From stack to site it is 60 miles and takes 60 minutes. Travel west on
I-10 until you get to the 339th Ave. exit, the Rip Griffin's Truck Stop
is at this exit. Go north (right) on 339th Ave. for 2 miles and then
turn west (left) on Indian School Rd. Go 2 mi. and then turn north
(right) on 355th Ave. This road becomes Wickenberg Road along the way.
You will pass Flatiron Mountain on the left, hence the name of the
site. At mile marker 23.3 you will turn east (right) on a wide dirt
road. If you go too far on Wickenberg Road, there is a cattle guard and
a Bureau of Land Management sign immediately along the road to let you
know, you went too far and missed the turn. So, this is NOT the dirt
road that runs along a fence line, the correct dirt road is to the south
of the fence. Note your odometer reading when you turn onto the dirt
road, the site is 0.9 miles off the pavement. The dirt road goes
through a wash and the site is on the left after you have traveled
through the wash. It is a large area of desert pavement on the left
side of the road. Some white rocks mark the entrance to the observing
site. The trip is all on hard surface roads, until you turn onto the
dirt road, which is well maintained.
I'll start packing the telescope in a little while,
aj
