[AZ-Observing] Re: Occultation Alert

I too was fortunate enough to not be doing the work thing, and I saw Jupiter
set. Although I was looking, I didn't see it rise from the dark side of the
moon until it was all the way out. Doh! Using my 8" Dob from the downtown
area, at 70x I was amazed of just how much detail was visible as I could see
Jupiter's two main cloud bands quite clearly, but I couldn't see any of the
moons. I must say that it isn't often I observe under such warm conditions,
but it was worth it. I do hope September 10th is a little cooler and less
humid.

I observed both the disappearance and reappearance of Jupiter from the parking
lot of the Motorola plant in Scottsdale where I work, through 10x50 binoculars
on a tripod. The sky was very clear for a change -- which was nice for
observing, but it sure was hot out there! A magnificent sight of a pinpoint
aligned with, then overtaken by, a delicate crescent -- the orbital dance in
action! Jupiter was not nearly as bright and obvious as Venus was for the
August 17 occultation; if the focus on my binoculars was just slightly off,
Jupiter disappeared into the pastel sky.
We'll have another lunar occultation (Saturn) early on the morning of September
10. For a list of this and other sky events for the rest of the year, see my
almanac:
