FreeLists / az-observing / [AZ-Observing] Vekol in jeopardy

Greetings,
On Thursday, July 24th I will be attending a meeting at the Maricopa County 
Planning & Zoning Commission to join in the protest against development in the 
Vekol Valley. This meeting preceeds a final decision by the Board of 
Supervisors on August 13th. This meeting was requested by the property owners 
in the Vekol Valley who are opposed to the development.

The matter of discussion is a rezoning change that would allow for the 
construction of a truck stop on the NE corner of I-8 and Vekol Road. Rumor has 
it that if the area is rezoned, the current owner will sell this project to Don 
Griffin International, probably creating an even larger truck stop. Needless to 
say, a project of this size, at this location, would have disastrous effects on 
the Vekol Road observing site.

I am looking for any and all input from list members: comments, suggestions, 
recommendations, etc. In short, anything that may be useful in presenting an 
intelligent voice of opposition to the proposed change in zoning. I have been 
asked, by local property owners, to speak at this meeting - to demonstrate that 
citizens other than ranchers oppose development of this area.

Additionally, if someone experienced in such matters would like to join me at 
this meeting, that would certainly be appreciated. I am told that the meeting 
will have about a dozen attendees, so I am not necessarily looking for support 
by your presence, but rather by your thoughts and ideas.
