The 'film' in this case is a 256 Mb Compact Flash card. I used a Canon
Digital Rebel camera. You can set film speed (ISO) on the fly, with the
downside of higher speed being more noise rather than film grain.
Despite the camera's high cost, I like the advantage of instant results.
As I have mentioned before, the real downside of long exposures with
digital cameras is poor response in longer wavelengths, particulary way
out at the H-alpha line. See Johannes Schedler's excellent article on the
subject in the June S&T for more information about astrophotography with a
digital SLR. He is the master.
