This message is being blind copied to all who've registered for the star
party. If you've contacted me about attending this event but did not receive
the CC, please let me know so I can add your name to the email distribution
list for this event.
===============
The Mormon Mountain Star Stare is just four weeks away and registration is at
22. That means there is plenty of room for you to sign up to attend. If you'd
like to attend, please contact me by email: billferris@xxxxxxxx
Hosted by the Coconino Astronomical Society (CAS), the Mormon Mountain Star
Stare will be held under the pristine dark skies of northern Arizona the
weekend of May 30 to June 1, 2003. The site for this late spring star party
is Antelope Park, a large open space about six miles northwest of Mormon
Lake, Arizona.
Antelope Park is a true dark sky site with minimal light trespass. The
Phoenix sky dome rises about 10 degrees above the south horizon. Flagstaff's
light imprint reaches above the forest to the north of the site. A couple of
red lights mark a communications tower atop Mormon Mountain to the southeast.
Otherwise, the site is very dark.
The star party is limited in attendance to fifty (50) people. CAS is keeping
this event fairly small for two reasons. The first is that we want to
demonstrate to Coconino National Forest staff that such an event will have
minimal impact on the forest. The second is that, this being the first major
star party hosted by CAS, we want to keep it manageable in size.
Finally, we're holding this event to seek input from other amateurs about the
suitability of Antelope Park as the site of a large star party. If the star
party is a success, CAS fully intends to make the Mormon Mountain Star Stare
an annual event with increased attendance to accommodate what we hope will be
significant interest from amateur astronomers around the region.
Due to the 50-person attendance limit, interested persons are required to
register with event coordinator Bill Ferris. Registrations will be accepted
on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no registration fee. Just send
me an email and I'll get back to you to confirm your registration. Here's my
address: billferris@xxxxxxxx
For more information about the Mormon Mountain Star Stare, including
directions and applicable Coconino National Forest rules, please visit the
event web site at this URL: http://members.aol.com/billferris/mormon.html
Hope to see you there.
