Tom, guess I forgot about George Robinson finding M77. It turns out he is
not the one I had in mind in the first response.
In all honesty, I too wondered about Dr. Aguirre's viewing M77, but there
didn't seem to be any compelling evidence to reject the observation. Turns
out there have been other suspected observations in the past that were
suspected only to find out, after the passage of some time, that it
certainly was possible. I'd also consider there being some luck, in
addition to skill, for finding something in below average observing
conditions.

But I'm still not convinced that he did not see it. As you say, we really
need to know the time of the observation to learn the optimal altitude/time
after sunset. I noticed that one other person on the list (George Robinson)
did see M77. He saw 108 objects, and missed only M33 and M74.
