Hi Chris- That is really something. I set here looking at that and
remember the times at Alpine that I used my 12 inch Schmidt to attempt the
California nebula. It worked great in black and white, but Evered and I
made a cold camera for the 4x5 format that it used. The color film that
was available then was slow and the emulsion was thicker than the regular
black and white film, which required a little refocusing of the schmidt even
though it was F- 4.5. When the faster, better color films became available,
they were never made in 4x5 and that Schmidt now just sits up there. What
a waste. Congrats on a great piece of work. It is amazing what you can do
with that equipment.
Regards
Keith Parizek

Subject: [AZ-Observing] Holmes/Calif Neb - Photographic Results
HI all,
Last night the sky was clear and transparent, and also
was the night of closest approach of the now large and
dim Comet Holmes with the large and exciting nebula,
NGC1499 - the California Nebula. the pair was imaged
with my Stellarvue SV80s refractor, a .8x focal
reducer and the modified Canon XTi DSLR. Two sets of
frames were needed to produce this panorama, which
covers the pair well:

I hope you have the chance to photograph or see
visually this unique pairing which will be now moving
off for the next few days.
