Good for the Czechs, receptivity was no doubt aided by the country's strong
astronomical tradition.
On the other hand, it seems as if the Czech astronomers hired info-mercial
execs to help them write the bill; you have to like their argument near the
end of the paragraph:
"The country's modern astronomers persuaded the government to introduce the
law by arguing that the excessive exposure to night-time lighting causes
near-sightedness, cancer, insomnia, damage to the immune system, and a
reduction in the production of the hormone melatonin."
Maybe if we add "terrorist activity" to the list, a similar bill would have
a chance in the US.
I have to admit that I've been a bit concerned about where all my melatonin
has gone recently.
