  I have seen some mounts almost as whimsical in real use.
There are fewer of them in recent years.
   
At big ATM events like Stellafane, have seen whole instruments 
(except optics) made of Meccano (thats sometimes sold as "Erector
Set" here in USA) or Lego's or bowling balls, watermelons or made up of  
popsicle sticks. You would be amazed at what TM's will do to get 
thier name and photo in Sky and Tel.
