Walter Alvarez is Professor of Geology at UC Berkeley, known for the =
widely-accepted theory that the dinosaurs were wiped out by a comet =
impact 65 million years ago. Alvarez has also worked extensively on =
plate tectonics and geomagnetic reversals, doing research in the =
Mediterranean, North Africa, Central Asia and South America. He has a =
passion for "Big History," the emerging interdisciplinary field that =
aims to tie everything in our planet's past, from its cosmic ancestry, =
through geological evolution, to the pageant of human societies. Alvarez =
is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and an honorary citizen =
of two Italian towns. He will deliver his lecture as recipient of the =
2008 Eugene Shoemaker Memorial Award.

Eugene Shoemaker was a pioneer of the science of cosmic impacts. He did =
extensive work at Meteor Crater in northern Arizona, and helped train =
lunar astronauts. He served terms as Chief Scientist at the US =
Geological Survey's Center of Astrogeology near Flagstaff, and as =
Professor of Geology at Caltech. Together with his wife and collaborator =
Carolyn Shoemaker, Gene scoured the skies for asteroids, and toured the =
Earth for concealed impact craters. It was on one such trip, to =
Australia in 1997, that he was tragically killed. In a unique gesture, =
NASA sent Gene's ashes to the moon. The annual Shoemaker Lecture honors =
the memory of this far-sighted and much-loved scientist.
