Hello everyone,

ASMP St. Louis is gearing up for an active fall. We're working hard to put together an interesting and worthwhile schedule of events, and I hope you can join us at some or all of them. A number of things are coming up, and I have been remiss in getting the word out, until now...

1) Board Meeting
This Monday, Sept. 11, 6:30pm, at Mangia Italiano on South Grand. All are welcome and encouraged, as always. This is not an oligarchy unless voter apathy makes it so.

2) NPPA Women In Photojournalism Conference
ASMP National has agreed to pony up the $500 to sponsor the NPPA (that's National Press Photographers Association) Women In Photojournalism Conference, which will be held Sept. 15 -17 at the Radisson Hotel in downtown St. Louis. That sponsorship fee gets us a table/booth in the trade show area, where we can hand out ASMP materials, answer questions, sign up new members, and generally just have a presence.

But we need VOLUNTEERS! ASMP National is taking care of almost everything, and in return we need to staff the table. I'd say we need at least four volunteers to do about 4 hours each, and it would be even better if we could have two people behind the table most of the time. Depending on the conference schedule, volunteers will be able to attend some of the weekend's presentations and speakers, which are otherwise only available to attendees who have paid a hefty fee for the whole weekend. The trade show is open from 9am - 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16 & 17. I am available on Saturday. Anybody else have some time?

3) Chicago Passion and Profession
So far, we have 6 people enrolled to attend the Chicago ASMP Passion & Profession weekend, October 13 - 15, at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The $275 entry fee covers room, board, and everything for the whole weekend except transportation (but you could catch a ride with us). Applications are accepted until September 15.

4) ASMP Web Marketing Seminar
The Web Marketing seminar is on Thursday, October 26, 6:30 - 9:30pm, at Meoli Studio. Host Blake Discher, a Detroit photographer, was here two (or was it three?) years ago with the Marketing, Pricing, and Negotiating seminar at Ferguson Katzman studio. Blake's presentation was very popular with St. Louis members; we had a large turn-out and great reviews.

Entry fee for this seminar is $30 for members, $55 for non-members. It's best to pre-register for this event, as registration at the door is $10 extra. For more details, and to pre-register, go to:

Or call the national office at: (215) 451-2767, ext. 1203.

5) Photo Scavenger Hunt
The Photo Scavenger Hunt is set for Saturday, November 11. We'll meet at a central location in the morning and hand out an assignment list. Everyone gets the same list, maybe ten or so items, some of them concrete and tangible, and some vague concepts with more room for interpretation. You shoot all day (or however long you want). In the evening we all meet back up for a meal and a slide show of the day's images. If you shoot film, you can display polaroids, or even hit a one-hour photo lab.

That's it for now. Don't forget to pre-register for the Web Marketing seminar! And if you have a couple hours to give next weekend, we could sure use your help at our booth at the NPPA Women in Photojournalism Conference.

All of this information is either already, or will soon be, posted to our local website at: http://www.asmpstlouis.org/

thanks, jay
