Yes, there is a much simpler and better way. You do not want to use
intersection in this case, you want to use dynamic clipping which is
far more powerful.
Intersection creates a static path that represents the intersection of
the shapes. If the original path had an outline, so does the
intersection, so the outline now runs around the line where the
pattern was intersected.
Clipping can clip everything and you can clip right through any thick
outlines.
So, instead of putting the rectangle on top you put it behind the
pattern, remove the line colour of the rectangle, select the pattern
in addition and choose "Apply ClipView", and then you get exactly the
result you wanted without any further adjustment being necessary.
