OK. For my machine the same applies as Lars said. The speaker output is
routed to the sound card, and the volume for the speaker channel as well
as a mute/unmute switch for the channel can be controlled via the sound
mixer.

Furthermore it is necessary that the bell volume in the X server is set
to a value > 0.

$ xset q | grep bell
  bell percent:  50    bell pitch:  400    bell duration:  100
