I agree 100%!!!

The problem is that the ISPs have to protect themselves from people
with little knowledge trying to "fiddle" with things they know nothing
about and thereby disrupting their connections. This causes the ISP's
held desk a lot of bother in trying to sort out the problems of these
people.

It also would require that the operators manning the help desks would
need a much deeper understanding of the technicalities of the computersd
and the modem/routers.

So the ISPs release the connection setup in a form that will run on
Windows or Mac only, and which cannot be easily read by the customer.

In this way they protect themselves from idiots who insist on mucking
about with things they should not touch.

But in the process they make it almost impossible for people who DO know
what they are doing and wish to go with an OS that is different from
that of the general herd.
