Freedos doesn't HAVE to be installed on the first primary partition. Mine isn't. I load with grub and you have to tell grub where freedos is and do the 'chain' thing to fool it into thinking freedos is on the first partition.
To my knowledge, this holds true for other versions of dos as well.

I was never able to get OpenDOS or M$DOS, to go anywhere but right next
to the MBR on the first partition, whereas DrDOS, ptsDOS, and FreeDOS
would go anywhere I wanted. The documentation for OpenDOS and M$DOS
even state they have to be next to the MBR. To me this is one of the
biggest advantages of DrDOS over OpenDOS.
