Update:

The bug definitely seems to be related to the exact position within 
the html file. The evidence is:

- Only one of the occurrences of &nbsp; is affected.
- Even minor mods to the file anywhere before the offending position 
are likely to mask the fault. 
- Large mods later in the file have had no effect.
- Adding a single space immediately before, masks the fault. Then 
deleting a single character from text higher up restores the fault.

Sounds to me like a buffering or memory corruption problem? If only I 
was into Arachne programming it would be an interesting exercise.
